Notes

Embossed delftwares appear in the mid to late 17th century and sherds with similar ornament have been excavated in Southwark, both at Pickleherring Quay and Rotherhithe. Dated pieces of delftware with similar ornament include a posset-pot and cover initialed KG and dated 1651 from the Glaisher collection, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and a tall mug initialed and dated 1653 formally in the Marquess of Bute and Longridge collections. Similar `thumbed’ bosses are seen flanking the pouring lip on jugs dated 1650, 1651, 1659 and 1662 (see Lipski & Archer, Dated English Delftware, London, 1984 nos. 969, 970, 972 and 974).
